WHY SHOULD I REGISTER?
You can only reap the full benefits of registering with Surfprint.co.uk after you have ordered your first product - you will then be able to save time and effort when designing all future products as your details will be automatically uploaded onto your template. You will be asked for only a few registration details before your first order can be confirmed.

After having ordered your first product you can then complete your registration: click ACCESS YOUR DESIGNS on the homepage and type your email address and password when prompted.

Click on EDIT YOUR INFO and complete the form as best you can.

It is worthwhile including prefixes before your telephone numbers, fax numbers and mobile numbers (eg. "tel.", "fax" and "mob."). Please also include "e-mail" and "www.". However, these prefixes can be added or altered later.

Click SAVE MY DETAILS, return to the homepage and your details will now appear automatically on any template you choose. This will always happen if you sign in BEFORE choosing a template. If you would rather it didn't happen, simply don't sign in - you will be able to design a new product as you did your first.

WHAT IS A LAYER?
The LAYER icons on the left refer to the various elements of your chosen template. BASE is the very bottom layer of the template; it is the canvas for the rest of your information. LAYER 1 will usually be pre-determined as a graphic. Similarly, layers 2 to 9 will usually be set-up to incorporate text. However, this can all be altered if you so wish.

DELETING A LAYER
At any point you can delete the contents of a layer by selecting the appropriate layer and clicking the DELETE LAYER button (bottom right of user interface). You will then be given the option to re-activate that layer as a text or a graphic layer. Alternatively, you can just leave it blank and move on to the next layer.

INSTRUCTIONS
If you require help with the designing of your stationery click on INSTRUCTIONS. This will give you some advice on how best to create your own stationery. Please note that all the suggestions made on the INSTRUCTIONS screen are simply guidelines - you need not adhere to them.

CHOOSING GRAPHICS
After selecting a template, click on the LAYER 1 icon. On most templates LAYER 1 is pre-set to contain a graphic. If you don’t want a graphic on your finished stationery choose DELETE LAYER. If, however, you do wish to include a graphic click on SELECT beside GRAPHIC. A drop-down menu will appear offering various categories of graphics. Within each category you can then preview each graphic. If you are not satisfied with any of the graphics simply choose another category. Once you have found a graphic you are happy with click on the preview and it will appear on your template. If you leave the LAYER 1 icon on your design it will be automatically deleted before printing.

COLOURING GRAPHICS
You now have the option to manipulate your chosen graphic. If you wish to change its colour click on SELECT next to COLOUR. Within the INKS AND SHADES folder seven inks are made available (white requires no ink, as all materials (paper and card) are originally white). Choosing one of these inks allows you to decide which shade of that ink you would prefer. The very light shades (15-20%) are ideal if you want your graphic to underlie your text as a base object. Clicking on each shade will allow you to see a preview. Once you have the shade you want, simply click on the preview and it will appear as the inking of the graphic on your template.

ROTATING GRAPHICS
To rotate your graphic simply click on ROTATE to open a drop-down menu. Select how many degrees you wish to turn your graphic and click UPDATE DESIGN or choose another layer. The graphic will have rotated using its centre as its axis.

SIZING GRAPHICS
If you wish to change the size of your graphic, simply type in a percentage of its original size and click UPDATE DESIGN or select another layer. The maximum size is a 1400% increase, the minimum is 10%.

GRAPHIC RE-POSITIONING
You can alter the position of your graphic using the MOVE function. Click on a directional arrow and your template will be automatically updated with your graphic in its new position. The amount you move the graphic is pre-set to one unit - a drop-down menu allows you to work in millimetres, inches, or points. Once you’ve selected your unit of choice, you can move the graphic anywhere you like on your template - simply type in an amount and then click on a directional arrow. Use the scale at the top of the page to judge how much you want to move your graphic.

LOST GRAPHIC
Please note that if you move the graphic by too large an amount it may disappear off the edge of the template. Small measurements are recommended - use the scale at the top of the page to judge how much you want to move your graphic. If your graphic does disappear off the template click on DELETE LAYER and re-activate it as a new graphic layer - your graphic will reappear on the top-left of your template (it will have returned to its 100% size).

MULTIPLE GRAPHICS
Once you have finished with your graphic, move on to any of the other layers. Most of these will be preset to contain text. If, however, you wish another graphic, select a layer between 2 and 9 and choose DELETE LAYER. You will now have the option to change that layer into a graphic layer. Please note that on some templates there are already undefined layers pre-set to contain EITHER text or graphics. We recommend that you use these layers for another graphic (a previously undefined layer will place itself on the top-left of your template). Create your second graphic using the same techniques as used for your first. A graphic can, in theory, be entered into all nine layers using the same techniques.

ENTERING TEXT
As mentioned above, most templates’ layers 2-9 are pre-set to contain text (although some are empty). There are recommendations given on what should be contained within each text block, eg. ENTER COMPANY NAME HERE, ENTER ADDRESS HERE, etc. These are only for guidance and you need not adhere to these suggestions - they are included simply because they are traditional and conventional. For instance, if you do not have a mobile number simply delete ENTER MOBILE HERE and that line will be deleted. If, for example, you would rather enter a pager number than a mobile number, delete ENTER MOBILE HERE and type in, for instance, "Pager - 08976 637389". If you wish to leave a blank line between two other lines of text, the blank line must include a character space (hit the space-bar once). The information printed on the product is entirely up to you - following our suggestions will ensure that information usually included on such stationery will not be omitted. Once you have typed the appropriate information into a text block click on UPDATE DESIGN or select your next layer. If you wish to change the look of your text there are several options:

FONT AND STYLE
The font can be easily altered by clicking on SELECT next to FONT. A drop-down menu will appear on the left-hand-side of the screen offering two folders: ALPHABETICAL and BY CATEGORY. Click on ALPHABETICAL if you desire a specific font and then simply select the correctly lettered folder. Choose BY CATEGORY if you are after a certain style but aren't sure of a name. Choosing one of these fonts will create a preview. Once you have found a suitable font click on the preview and the appropriate text will be altered on your template.

FONT SIZE
The size of your text can be altered by selecting the box next to POINT SIZE and entering a new point size. Point size on Surfprint is exactly the same as in most popular word-processing packages (72 points are equivalent to one inch or 25mm).

COLOURING TEXT
If you wish to change the colour of your text click on SELECT next to COLOUR. Within the INKS AND SHADES folder seven inks are made available (white requires no ink, as all materials (paper and card) are originally white). Choosing one of these inks allows you to decide which shade of that ink you would prefer (100% darkest, 10% lightest). Clicking on each shade will allow you to see a preview. Once you have the shade you want, simply click on the preview and it will appear as the inking of the text on your template.

MOVING TEXT
You can alter the position of your text using the MOVE function. Click on a directional arrow and your template will be automatically updated with the text in its new position. The amount you move the text is pre-set to one unit - a drop-down menu allows you to work in millimetres, inches, or points. Once you’ve selected your unit of choice, you can move the text anywhere on your template - simply type in an amount and then click on a directional arrow. Please note: when an layer has been aligned to the centre of the template it is not possible to move it either left nor right. If you wish to move an layer horizontally, first align it to the left or to the right - NOT the centre. The left and right cursors should now be available.

LOST TEXT
Please note that if you move the text by too large an amount, it may disappear off the edge of the template. Small measurements are recommended - use the scale at the top of the page to judge how much you want to move your text. If your text does disappear off the template click on DELETE LAYER and re-activate it as a new text layer - your text will reappear on the top-left of your template.

LAYERING
The BASE is the underlying design of the template; in many ways it is the canvas for your information. Everything else, ie. Layers 1-9, will sit on top of your base. The uppermost layer will always be LAYER 9. In other words:

LAYER 1 sits on top of the BASE;

LAYER 2 sits on top of LAYER1;

LAYER 3 sits on top of LAYER 2;

LAYER 4 sits on top of LAYER 3;

LAYER 5 sits on top of LAYER 4;

LAYER 6 sits on top of LAYER 5;

LAYER 7 sits on top of LAYER 6;

LAYER 8 sits on top of LAYER 7;

LAYER 9 sits on top of everything else.

OVERLAPPING LAYERS
Keep the point above in mind when you are designing stationery with overlapping layers. LAYER 1 usually contains a graphic so that no text will be hidden below that graphic. If you create another overlapping graphic layer, beware that the graphic may be layered above your existing text layers. To solve this it would be wise to insert your second graphic in LAYER 2 before creating your text blocks. If you have changed LAYER 1 into a text block, please note that the text therein will be hidden below any overlapping graphic layers.

CHOOSING A BASE
Always attempt to choose the template which is closest to satisfying your needs. If, however, you do require to alter the base, click on BASE. If you don’t want a base on your finished stationery choose DELETE LAYER. If, however, you wish to alter the base click on SELECT beside GRAPHIC. A drop-down menu will appear offering various categories of graphics. Within each category you can then preview each graphic. If you are not satisfied with any of the graphics simply choose another category. Any graphic can be used as a base - however, every template’s base is initially selected from the BACKGROUND category. Once you have found a graphic that is suitable for your base click on the preview and it will appear on your template. Please note that you will probably have to re-size and/or re-position your new base.

COLOURING THE BASE
You now have the option to manipulate your chosen base. If you wish to change its colour click on SELECT next to COLOUR. Within the INKS AND SHADES folder seven inks are made available (white requires no ink, as all materials are originally white). Clicking on each shade will allow you to see a preview. Once you have the shade you want, simply click on the preview and it will appear as the inking of the base on your template.

ROTATING THE BASE
To rotate your base simply click on ROTATE to open a drop-down menu. Select how many degrees you wish to turn your base and click UPDATE DESIGN or choose another layer. The base will have rotated using its centre as its axis. The base can be returned to its original position by entering 0.

SIZING THE BASE
If you wish to change the size of your base, simply type in a percentage of its original size and click UPDATE DESIGN or select another layer. The maximum size is a 1400% increase, the minimum is 10%.

MOVING THE BASE

If your base does disappear off the template click on DELETE LAYER and re-activate it as a new graphic layer - your base will reappear on the top-left of your template (it will have returned to its 100% size).

VIEW ACTUAL SIZE
At any time during the designing of your stationery you can select VIEW ACTUAL SIZE. This will open a separate window showing your design at the size it will actually be printed. If your design is A4 in size, you will need to copy the proof and paste it into an application such as Word to print the complete page. Business cards are already actual size within the design system but by clicking VIEW ACTUAL SIZE all hints will be removed giving you a more accurate impression of your finished design.
After completing your design you can print a proof by clicking the VIEW ACTUAL SIZE button. Please note: this printing facility is purely for proofing purposes. Your product will eventually be printed using exact inks at the highest possible resolution.

FLIPPING
Flipping Graphics:

To flip a graphic select the appropriate layer and click on either HORIZ or VERT next to FLIP. By flipping a graphic horizontally it will appear as a mirror image in exactly the same place on the template. Flipping a graphic vertically will recreate it upside-down and back-to-front in exactly the same place.

Flipping the BASE:

To flip the base select BASE and click on either HORIZ or VERT next to FLIP. By flipping the base horizontally, for example, a graphic on the top-left will appear as a mirror image on the top-right, ie. the graphic will be flipped and change position within the template. Flipping the base vertically will mean graphics at the top will be upside-down at the bottom of the template; again, the graphic will be flipped and not appear in the same place.

No. of inks:

In terms of cost, Surfprint splits designs into two categories: ‘one-colour’ and ‘multiple colours’. Surfprint lets you know how many inks you have used. Please note that, regarding cost, the various shades of an ink are regarded as the same ink, eg. A single-color product can actually use up to ten different shades of the same ink; similarly, a multiple-color product can have up to 70 different shades of ink. White is NOT an ink - all materials (paper and card) are originally white, eg. Black text on a white base only involves black ink. Any white, therefore, can be regarded as blank. ‘Reflex blue’ and ‘Process blue’ are two different inks. Therefore, a product containing shades of both these blues will be billed as multiple-colour.

Quantity:

You may order any amount available on the drop-down menu (between 100 and 5000).
